The AAT Level 4 qualification follows a clear and structured format, combining three mandatory core units with two optional units chosen to suit your role and long term career goals.
You will build advanced, practical skills through the application of professional accounting techniques. This includes preparing and interpreting financial statements, producing financial reports for decision making, developing and managing budgets, and applying tax principles within a business context.
The programme also strengthens your understanding of internal accounting systems and controls, helping you operate with accuracy, compliance, and professional judgement as you progress into more senior accounting and finance roles

Exam Details
All mandatory units have exam durations lasting 150 minutes. As for the optional units, here are their respective exam durations:
- Optional Unit 1- Business Tax: 150 mins
- Optional Unit 2- Personal Tax: 150 mins
- Optional Unit 3- Audit and Assurance: 150 mins
- Optional Unit 4- Cash and Financial Management: 120 mins
- Optional Unit 5- Credit and Debt Management: 120 mins
Once you've completed your exams, the raw marks per exam are converted into a percentage and weighted according to the unit weighting, see below, to provide an overall grade.
- Applied Management Accounting: 30%
- Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements: 20%
- Internal Accounting Systems and Control: 20%
- Optional Unit 1: 15%
- Optional Unit 2: 15%
You must score at least 70% in every exam to receive your qualification.
Passing Scores:
- Distinction: 90–100%
- Merit: 80–89%
- Pass: 70–79%
- Unclassified: 0–69% (or non-competent to pass one or more assessments)
You can sit these exams via remote invigilation or at AAT-approved test centres. To sit the exams, you must become an AAT student member. Student membership and exam fees are not included in the course fee.
Mandatory unit: Applied Management Accounting
You'll also learn to use data to assess risk, improve operations, and guide long-term decision-making.

Mandatory unit: Drafting and Interpreting Financial Statements
You will also learn financial management skills to effectively produce limited company financial statements for financial reporting.

- Draft statutory financial statements for limited companies within legal and professional rules
- Draft consolidated financial statements including monitoring taxation liabilities in compliance with international accounting standards
- You will learn the finance skills to interpret financial statements using ratio analysis
Mandatory unit: Internal Accounting Systems and Controls

Optional unit: Business Tax
Understand the regulations and practices around UK business taxation. You'll learn to manage tax liabilities, compute business taxes, prepare accurate returns, and apply business tax rules to sole traders, partnerships and limited companies. You'll cover drafting financial statements and preparing consolidated financial statements for the various aspects of business taxation systems including; capital assets, capital gains tax planning opportunities, income tax and inheritance tax.

- Prepare tax computations for the sale of capital assets by limited companies
- Understand the administrative requirements of the UK's tax regime

Optional unit: Personal Tax
Learning outcomes:

- Calculate income tax and National Insurance contributions (NICs) payable by UK taxpayers

Optional unit: Cash and Financial Management
You'll gain the skills to support financial stability and strategic financial management across the business.
Cash is always king in any business. A company can be non-profitable but still survive for a long period of time if it has a strong working capital.
A business without sufficient cash to pay its bills and wages will go under. A key control of cash flow is effective credit control systems and an efficient credit control environment.
Learning outcomes:
- Prepare forecasts for cash receipts and payments. Ensure cash receipts are received on time to ensure sufficient funds are available to accounts payable to pay bills.
- A cash forecast looks at future cash transactions to accurately prepare cash budgets.

Before you Start
You should already have a solid grasp of accounting principles and be comfortable working with financial data.
To enrol on this course, you'll need to meet at least one of the following requirements:
- You must have completed the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting or hold an equivalent qualification
- Hold an accountancy or finance degree.
- Have over 3 years experience at various levels of accountancy.
